Heterogeneous Vinyl
A heterogeneous vinyl is one that relies on a surface wear layer over a backing. The wear layer thickness varies from thinner 0.15mm residential qualities through to 1mm commercial contract quality.
The backing, which is generally of foam, allows for more underfoot comfort. As technology develops, so do the product features offered eg slip-resistant, stain resistant, anti-bacterial, comfort foam, embossed and easy-care surfaces, etc.
Homogeneous Vinyl
This is vinyl that has solid colour and pattern from the top surface to the back. Thicknesses vary, but are generally around 2.0mm thick.
Homogeneous vinyls are generally specified in commercial heavy traffic or heavy wear areas. Homogeneous vinyl pattern types are more limited than Heterogenous, with the majority of pattern designs being speckled or mottled.
